[itdiscuss] WordPress and permlinks

mod_rewrite.c is listed in the installed modules in Apache. I'm running
multiple Joomla sites that use it no prob. 

If I type the specific permlink URL based on my custom structure ( which
is /%postname%/ ) the permlink works fine. 

If I just type the primary domain name of the site...it doesn't work...
blank page, forever spinning icon...no 404s...just never loads. 

 

I set the site as you have it set (custom structure, category base, and
tag base) and it has the same issue described above.

Double check mod_rewrite for Permalinks: a2enmode rewrite in Apache and
double check Permalink Setting is: WordPress --> Settings --> Permalinks
   Custom Structure: /%category%/%postname%/
   Category Base: cat
   Tag Base: tag

I'm not sure if that was specific to the website I'm working with or not
but maybe that will point you in the right direction.

Hello,

  I'm not a regular WordPress admin so this may be a simple question to
those who use it.

 

I have a site (hosted in a LAMP environment) that does not have
permlinks enabled and no .htaccess file. 

When I enable permlinks Wordpress creates the .htaccess file.

I can then browse to http://website/friendly-name if I type the specific
URL 

However, if I just type the base URL http://website I get a bank browser
page and the forever spinning icon indicating the page is loading...but
never does. I can then disable permlinks and the site works fine again. 

 

I have other sites (not wordpress) hosted on the same server using
search engine friendly URLs so mod_rewrite is for sure enabled on the
server. 

Any clue as to why permlinks work when tying the URL directly but then
the base URL for the site doesn't load?
