[itdiscuss] network inventory

The data they collect they say is only system data. However, call it
paranoid, but what is to stop them from collecting more once the
mechanism is in place to collect even only system data?

The data they collect and how they use it is laid out in their privacy
policy. One of the parts that is most concerning to me is they state
"Your Privacy is Not for Sale" then they go on and say how they give it
away to 3rd party contractors that are bound by the same policies. So
they collect it. They don't sell or rent it. They just give it away to
who they choose. Those 3rd party contractors cross their hearts that
they won't sell it or give it out. I just found their privacy statement
very long, and overly complicated and way too open for who they decide
to give information to. I found it much easier and more comforting not
to give any corporate IT data to SpiceWorks at all other than the IP
address I use to visit their page from.

Your Privacy is Not for Sale

Simply put, we do not and will not sell or rent your personal
information to anyone, for any reason, at any time. Spiceworks uses and
discloses your personal information only as follows:

*         to analyze site usage and improve the Service;

* to deliver to you any administrative notices, network alerts,
system notifications, and communications relevant to your use of the
Spiceworks service;

* to fulfill your requests for certain products, information and
services;

* for market research, project planning, troubleshooting Service
problems, detecting and protecting against error, fraud or other
criminal activity;

* to third-party contractors that provide services to Spiceworks
and are bound by these same privacy restrictions;

*         to enforce Spiceworks Terms of Use;

* as otherwise set forth in this Privacy Policy.

I've used the 3Com product in the past and it was excellent.

What do you mean that your data is sent to Spiceworks? How do you know
that to be true?

We use lansweeper. Its very powerful for free, and for $299 a year much
more so.

I looked into SpiceWorks, but I was not at all happy with the fact that
any internal data about our systems was sent to them.

So for free we went with LanSweeper. We were so happy with it over time
we upgraded to the paid version.

It does not do physical network mapping. We use 3com switches and use
the Network Supervisor software that came with our switches for the
mapping aspect.

A tool for drawing network digrams which are interactive would be
Network Notepad. I have only heard about it and never used it as Network
Supervisor fulfills our needs.

I know this has come up before, but I wanted to check on any new
products. I am currently using Asset Tracker for Networks which is a
great program, but I still have to create in Visio to have a physical
picture of the network. What network inventory programs do you use?
What do you think of Spiceworks
