[itdiscuss] Streaming Server

The thing you need to bear in mind is the bandwidth need when hosting your own services. It really takes very little to overwhelm your internet connection if you host your own. Just determine the bandwidth of the stream you're providing and use that as the divisor into your Internet connection and you'll see how many streams you can provide before you have to host with a provider with some serious bandwidth.

I'd say it will be much easier to start with the assumption that you'll be streaming to a hosting provider. Don't forget that if your streaming Internet connection is the same as your primary Internet connection, you'll be consuming your outbound internet bandwidth for your entire organization with your stream.

Also consider the number of streams you will be consuming internally. If they are consuming from your external host you could easily overwhelm your entire inbound bandwidth as well. You may want to consider an internal streaming host server for internal clients. I would permit very few strategic inbound streams to be able to verify the operation of the streaming host but also to preserve inbound bandwidth.

You probably need to consider network priority for your stream as well to guarantee no other services step on the needed outbound stream. This may be accomplished with QoS in your router for the outbound stream and possibly for your internal network if you run your switching architecture near capacity.

You might want to take a look at Wowza Media Server. It's Java-based, so will run on most platforms. Basic operation isn't especially difficult. It gets into heavy programming when you start getting into deep customization and extension of the program. Perpetual licenses run about $750 for non-profits, or you can get a subscription license where you're billed monthly based on how many instances you use. You also have the option of running it on Amazon EC2.

At my church we are looking for a streaming server that isn't too costly and doesn't take a programming to get it up and running. We need it to broadcast services to home bound members. If at all possible, it would good if it was Windows based and I'd love it if it was open-source. Any ideas?

Thanks,
