I agree with your concern about having potentially confidential
information in the hands of a third party. 

 

There are some open source solutions you might want to look into. The
one I have heard the most about, but not used, is Spark and Openfire
from Ignite: http://www.igniterealtime.org/downloads/index.jsp. They
have a server, client, and web client.

I have a key user that wants to implement IM.  However, I don't want to
bring in a "free" service because of what I think is the security risk.
Am I justified in my security concern?  I was thinking the best way is
to implement something internal to my LAN.  What do you all think?
