[itdiscuss] mapping (Julianna Hutchins)

If smart switches are fixing your problem, may that means you have a
network/wiring loop. Possibly you've got some network cable plugged in
to one switch somewhere with the other end also plugged into a switch?

I've had this happen to me about 2-3 times over 5 years and it somehow
interfered with our file server so much that you couldn't even connect
to it although we could still connect with the other servers. (I have
all basic switches. Smart switches detect these kind of loops and
isolate them.)

It's possible. I finally called in the big guns (IS Consulting) and had
them run diagnostics on all the equipment. They kept having the same
issues
I was, and they had never seen a network go up and down randomly
choosing
the servers. They brought in a couple of smart switches and that solved
the
problem. The equipment is on loan until the smart switches I bought
from
Dell arrive. First time we've spent the bucks for smart switches, but I
think we have just grown too big for our "switches"! Sorry, could
resist.
If you need a company that can do the network trouble shooting, these
guys
were great. I've never had to go outside for this kind of work, but
would
highly recommend them.

Julianna,
I had a similar problem last week. The XP clients were losing the mapped
drives and they were losing their outlook connections to the server.
Nothing
showed in the event logs. I ran the following at a command prompt on the
problem systems, and all issues cleared up -
        netsh winsock reset
I wonder if this had anything to do with the latest server 2003 patch
updates??

Hi,

Anyone had a problem with the mapping disconnecting and reconnecting
without
apparent reason? I have several servers and two DC's. Beginning this
morning users began to have issues that would eventually freeze their
machines. I've narrowed it down to the mapping problem. I brought down
all
the servers and DC's, also reset the switches. Still have issues. They
log
on (I have scripts, and may have rights to all and then suddenly lose
connection with one or the other of the servers.

Any idea?

Sounds like network connectivity problems. Can you do some continuous
ping
tests from a couple of the machines having trouble back the servers
where
the mappings go to and look for problems?

Something like a c:\ping dcname -t

At least that would tell you whether it is having trouble talking to the
server.

Also, are the DC's, mapping destinations or computers having trouble
showing
anything in the eventlogs that might shed light on it?

YBIC,
Jason
