Ray,
I am using ESX 3.5, I have not used the 3i yet. Does it give you an
option in the Virtual Machine Properties, under the CD/DVD Drive, to the
CD Drive as a Host Device? It should show it as a /dev/had if it is a
IDE drive. It needs to see the Physical Server CD drive as its own.
The other option that I have seen is to check the BIOS Settings of the
VM Client, as VM Client starts to boot up hit F1 to take it in to the
BIOS of the VM Client and make sure the Boot options are set to go the
CD drive first, that should be the default, but it would be something
else to check.
Thanks,
Mark Rock

I set the first boot device as the ide cd and then set the boot delay to
the max of 10 seconds. When the vm boots I see the CD in the start up
but it immediately jumps to boot to NIC.

In the VM client machine properties make sure you create a CD/DVD drive
in that VM client, set it up as Host Device /dev/hda and set the CD/DVD
drive status to Connected and Connected at Power on. Put the OS cd in
the drive and bring up the VM client, it should see the device and up
off the CD.

Not sure how helpful this will be, but perhaps it will work better if
you create an ISO of the CD, and reference the ISO instead of the CD to
boot the guest.

I downloaded this last night and attempted to bring it up on a brand
new, never been run, well-endowed Dell 2950 (no SAN). First off, the
documentation leaves a little to be desired for a newcomer. After a
couple of hours of fiddling with it, I was able to get it up and running
and using the VMWare Infrastructure Client. And a few minutes latter I
had a vm sitting inside the client. My problem is that I can't get the
vm to boot to the CD so I can load the OS. I have been through the dox
and the client help. Maybe I missed something. Does anybody out there
have any suggestions.
