I would like to say I also have the best customers in my industry. They happen to be the only customers I have in my industry J. I suppose without them being my customers they would not be my customers therefore not my best customers.

Yes, your experience is certainly better than mine. I’ve had applications that simply will not run, requiring you to meticulously go through the system and library files for each user, deleting all files related to that application in an effort to reinstall. I’ve had weird networking issues where server connections get severed with no explainable reason – interestingly, a OS reinstall fixed this particular problem. I’ve had strange permissions issues where file permissions were set correctly, but permissive access still could not be granted – running a deep permissions reset corrected this problem, but still leaves no explanation as to why it occurred in the first place. I’ve had multiple notebooks with power problems seemingly pointing to a hardware issue, but went away if the computer was booted from an external disk.
And that is just the beginning. I currently support a couple dozen Macs, and I’ve spent enough time working with them to know my way around the system (a good understanding of Unix has helped J). I have used TechTool Pro, but I still want to see some good utilities for diagnosing deeper problems.

No suggestions, actually. But that’s the funny thing. I know everyone’s experiences are different. In my 8+ years with Mac (OS X only) and PCs, I have yet to have PC-type problems on the Mac. With the Mac here are the problems I have occasionally:
· Printer drivers
· Losing connection with Active Directory (requiring me to re-add the computer via the Directory Utility)
· Software updates
Occasionally, I have had a hard drive fail, or memory fail. But almost all the failures I have are diagnosable from the Tech Tool hardware utility. I don’t have the software problems I have with Windows, at least to this point. You are correct that troubleshooting is harder in that sense on a Mac, because we are just less trained on it. But quite honestly, I don’t have to do the same kind of troubleshooting on the Mac that I have to do on the PC. I don’t get all the error prompts and such. Occasionally we have to force quit a application, but then it is fine.
So, I am not sure I have an answer, other than my experience has been I don’t work on the Macs I manage nearly the amount of time I work on PCs, and the nature of the problems is just different, again in my limited experience.

You bring up an interesting question somewhat related to my other posting on Mac Automations. You mention the ease of use in maintaining the performance and reliability of your Mac systems over your Windows computers. What tools do you use in diagnosing and troubleshooting Mac problems?
On the Windows side of things, there are countless tools available for identifying performance and reliability issues on a Windows system. As I have explored recommended utilities on Apple’s site, most of the tools available on the Mac are rather superficial. Most provide basic diagnostic information such as “yes the network port is working”, or “yes the SMART status is good”; but I have yet to discover anything more substantial. I find myself operating in a Unix terminal prompt to solve many issues; but would love to have access to something more user friendly but detailed in its analysis. Any suggestions?

The point is that Apple as a company is doing well even in this difficult economy. Apple systems are fast, high performance, and reliable, unlike many Windows systems I've had to maintain. The Apple product (MacBookPro Laptop, MacPro Workstation, iMac Home System, and iPhone Mobile Platform) are superior to Windows in almost every way, and should be seriously considered at your next purchase opportunity. Apple especially excels in the creative media area: web, audio, video, photography, print, and graphic art.
Macs cost more, but they are worth the investment in your organization since they are higher quality systems, and yield higher levels of productivity.

Apple shipped 2,611,000 Macintosh® computers during the quarter,
representing 21 percent unit growth and 17 percent revenue growth over
the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 11,052,000 iPods during the
quarter, representing eight percent unit growth and three percent
revenue growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold
were 6,892,000 compared to 1,119,000 in the year-ago-quarter.
“Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a
spectacular performance by the iPhone—we sold more phones than RIM,”
said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We don’t yet know how this economic
downturn will affect Apple. But we’re armed with the strongest product
line in our history, the most talented employees and the best
customers in our industry. And $25 billion of cash safely in the bank
with zero debt.”
