I've used audacity for years and would highly recommend it.  You will get better sound recording though if you to a to d conversion using something that will pull it in through the usb port like the griffin iMic for $40.  The line-in in my experience has a lot of noise from the fan and hard drive and the usb input bypasses all of that.
