If you have the money, then you are correct.  However, without VMotion,
the value of ESX is diminished enough that it becomes hard to sell to
management.

While VMotion is a great feature, if I had a choice between ESX w/out
VMotion and Server, I would choose ESX every time.  It's worth the
money!  

ESX provides a custom OS built specifically for VMware.  I would far
prefer that over an OS running VMware on top for reasons of Performance
and Robustness.

I'm with Jason.  If you don't have VMotion, then why buy the SMB
package?  Just use VMWare server.  If you don't want to use the Windows
version, then use the Linux version.  Without VMotion ESX doesn't have a
lot of appeal.

The new SMB packages don't include vmotion unless you pick the $15k
option :-(

The word I have from VMware is that they don't know about discounts at
this point. There are not non-profit discounts; only academic at this
time. However, there may not be any on this package since it is already
totally discounted (from basically $15k down to $3k).

You will note that the packages and prices are listed as MSRP, so
through a VAR they will probably be less, though how much is unknown at
this time. Availability is slated for November, according to my
conversations with VMware directly. So for the entry level, support is
max of $750/year, which is awesome.

Again, for most of us, 3 hosts is probably enough to run your whole
virtualized infrastructure. We don't virtualize our storage and our back
system, but we do everything else. So we have a total of 5 physical
servers right now, but 20+ servers overall. Again, my caveat; still in
development. We are going live at the end of November.

So really, if you wanted to, you could buy SANmelody fairly
inexpensively and a couple of hosts, and redo your whole infrastructure
for what a typical SAN costs, for us small shops out there.

Also, I used VMware Converter to move our my VMs I had previously on
VMware Server. It worked fantastically. One trick in doing so is to
resize the drives to the minimum (the amount of data currently stored on
the drive) before you move it, and then expand the drives using
vmkfstools -x and diskpart.exe (in windows) and you will save a lot of
time moving serves with very large drives.

So, anyway, that's a small plug for VMware. I would recommend you
contact VMware for a trial if you are interested. If you have never
setup VMware ESX 3 before, it can be difficult, but once it is going, it
is rock solid. Feel free to contact me directly with any questions...I

Hey everybody,

It's been a long time since I have posted to this group, but I'm curious
of something.  I work for EMC who owns 86% of VMWare as you all may
know.  I'm curious, if I could put this together, if those in the
surrounding Atlanta area would be interested in having a "lunch 'n'
learn" around VMWare and see if there is anyway that my contact within
EMC could help you all with VMWare. 

If you are interested, please let me know and I will try and put this
together.

As well, seeing as a lot of our business is storage and my company is
moving further and further into the SOHO space I would be glad to do
something around that as well.
