I just recently cancelled my service with 1&1 (for my personal
websites), after repeated problems getting any kind of useful support
and constant billing inaccuracies. My understanding is that they're
great if you're in Europe, but they still need training wheels with the
US market.

I just set up a VPS hosting account for a friend through www.1and1.com
Wow.
This is definitely the way to go if you want full control over the
server
environment.  I chose the "VPS II" Windows Server package, which
provides 20
GB of HDD, 256 MB of RAM, and the ability to login over remote desktop
as
the local Administrator - all for only $40/month!  It comes with MySQL
and a
few other tools pre-installed.  I was able to download and install
MS-SQL
2005 Express Edition for my friend's application.  I may never go back
to
shared hosting again!!
