[itdiscuss] recommended hardware for DB server

I'm almost in the market for a new DB server and I'm leaning towards
running a full-blown implementation of SQL Server 2005.

What hardware specs would you recommend for a dedicated DB server? My
goal is to fine-tune the hardware for SQL Server 2005 operation.

Processor: xeon? dual/single proc? dual/quad core?

RAM: Invest in bus speed or quantity? (I know, as much as I
can afford)

Hard drive: which flavor of SCSI? SATA? configuration? RAID 1 for
system partition/RAID 5 for data partition?

As for SQL Server 2005

32-bit or 64-bit?

I'm also considering "virtualizing" the DB server on some new hardware.
What are the hardware specs of your virtual host servers?
